On April 12th, Theory received a gift from some friends of ours – Cozies by Zutano.  These are fleece booties that fit snugly so that they don’t fall off of newborn’s feet.  A number of friends of ours have used them and really love them – so we were excited to receive them.  We put them on her in the morning and spent the day at home visiting with Tara’s parents.

In the afternoon, we went to change her and found that the tight ecstatic on the ankles had dug into Theory’s legs, leaving deep bruises.  It was very upsetting for a number of reasons.  Mostly, it was the first time, other then a tiny scratch, that Theory got hurt.

More disturbing to us was the idea that Theory was in pain unbeknownst to us.  It made us feel like bad parents.

I figured maybe the mark was similar to the kind you would get as a kid when you had a rubber band around your wrist, and it would soon disappear.  But the next day, and the next week, the mark remained.

When we had Theory’s two month check-up, we took the booties to the doctor to ask him how long it would take for the marks to heal.  He looked at the marks with surprise and said we should wait and see what happens.

Well as you can see, seven weeks later, the marks remain.

It is more than just the scar per se.  There is a symbolic significance to her first scar – she is not impervious to the world.  She is going to get hurt and you are not able to completely protect her.  It is a hard pill to swallow.  Especially when she can get injured by something as innocuous as some fleece booties.

On May 6th I wrote to the company and warned them about the injury.  Doing a quick search on the internet revealed that another individual had the exact same injuries and posted a review about it on Amazon.  I responded with a review in kind.  Zutano wrote back saying they would investigate the issue, and send us a replacement outfit.  We were asked to please return the booties in a prepaid envelope that they would ship. This really disappoints me.

I am still hoping the marks dissapear eventually as Theory grows but it is very upsetting to have a product injur your child.  So far we have heard nothing back from Zutano about their review of the product design.  Nor did wwe ever receive that outfit, or a box to return the defective product.

The first scratch, bruise, cut – hurts the parents more than the baby. I hear you, makes you want to cry to think of them in pain doesn’t it. I hope Zutano does right by you.

Hi! I’m so sorry that this happened to your baby. Something very similar just happened to my baby, only with socks. It happened a couple days ago, and seems to be getting worse. I don’t want. Be too nosey but, did these scars disappear? I’m thinking I’ll be calling the doctor in the morning to see if there’s anything I can do. I was expecting it to be gone the next day, but everything I read sounds like it’ll be here for a while. I’m a little nervous about putting socks on her again since I had no clue until I took them off. Thanks for any info you can give me.
