Sleep

We have been very lucky in that Theory is a super-easy baby.  She is not very fussy and she is quick to soothe.
There are times however, when putting Theory to sleep can be a heartbreaking experience.  By 6:30 or 7, her eyes get red, she rubs her face, shaking her head back and forth over and over again.  She can shout out with surprising force.  Her frustration and anger are ever so visible as her down-turned frown and red face precede her cries.

Leah Hazard, Author of The Father’s Home Birth Handbook

Leah Hazard is the author of the Father’s Home Birth Handbook.  She is an American ex-pat living in Glasgow, a doula, and had a home-birth herself.  I mentioned her book before and it remains one of my favorite reads when you are preparing for the birth of your first child — obviously it speaks primarily to dads.
The book is quite unique from the other books out there on a number of points.  It blends testimonials of dads with expert advice and information.  The first chapter, entitled “Risk and Responsibility,” for …

LA Times Explores the C-Section Rate

The LA Times today published an article “Childbirth: Can the U.S. improve?” which raises the question as to why our c-section rate is so high.
In general it is appositive article that address some basic concerns about our very high c-section rate but also includes a few ridiculous comments like the idea that this is driven by a halo effect from celebrities who chose elective c-sections.

Choice and Ideology

I recently stumbled upon the blog of Dr. Amy Tuteur, The Skeptical OB.

Her blog attacks the lack of science behind a lot of the claims about immunizations, autism, homebirth, and other topics. I enjoy reading the site as it provides a very critical view of many of the practices that Tara and I engage in, and thereby provides a stress test for us.
She recently posted in response to Ricky Lake’s advocacy of home birth.
